Collaboration with friends is one of our greatest pleasures, and we’re kicking off 2023 with a very special one: a small collection of ceramic containers designed by our own Winnie Crittenden, with hand-carved wooden lids from Japanese sculptor and long-time Heath friend, Hideki Takayama.
The Character of Wood
Taka works in a mountainous region of Tokyo, where inspiration from nature abounds. A self-taught sculptor, his work ranges from practical to whimsical. For this collection, Taka used five types of Japanese wood. “I mixed the messages from each material.” he says, drawing on the warmth of the clay, and carving lids that evoke the shapes of leaves and nuts.
The Language of Glaze
Winnie created the Winter Seasonal palette as an homage to evergreen trees, with a special technique reminiscent of fresh snow on spruce boughs. Our special techniques emerge from a process of experimentation, and on rare occasions, we share those explorations with our community. This collection showcases Winnie’s skill, creativity, and vision–a fluency in the language of glaze.
The character in these one-of-a-kind pieces goes beyond the beauty of the materials, and even the skillfulness of the craft. These works of art are infused with the spirit of their makers–Winnie’s wonder, Taka’s warmth, and the joy they both took from working together to make this collection for you.
