Armadillo
Armadillo was born from a desire to combine aesthetics and ethics with clear focus on social responsibility. All Armadillo products are 100% handmade, using Fair Trade practices with natural and sustainable fibers. Every purchase provides employment and helps sustain an industry of ancient craftsmanship, and supports education and local schools in their weavers’ villages. Rotate rugs from end to end and consider placing them in different parts of the house to share the wear. It’s best to keep your rug away from direct sunlight and heat sources, such as gas heaters and fireplaces, which can cause the natural fibers to dry out and fade. Keep rugs dry and out of dark places, such as tucked tightly under lounge suites or furniture, to avoid the risk of moths.
Ensure that the floor underneath and around the rug stays clean and dry. Detergent and soap residues can become sticky and collect other dirt, which is then walked onto your rug. By keeping your hard floors clean, your rug will stay cleaner for longer.
Vacuuming your rug before any dirt is embedded, ideally twice a week. It is best to use a vacuum with a motorized head (such as a Dyson). We do not recommend high temperature steam cleaning as this can shrink or expand the rug fibers. Armadillo recommends Host Carpet Cleaning Kit for regular maintenance.
Every few months, turning your rug over and placing in the sun for an hour is a great way to reduce bacteria build-up and eliminate moth eggs. Vacuum the back of your rug before repositioning.
Armadillo rugs are available for order online or purchased in our San Francisco (Mission location) and Los Angeles showrooms. Please note that there is a 2–6 week delivery window for these products. All rug and furniture sales are final.
For a hard surface, we recommend a non-slip underlay to ensure your safety and provide extra comfort.
The golden rule is to attend to the spill or stain as quickly as possible to minimize the risk of permanent damage.
For liquid spills: Place a colorfast cloth or paper towel over the spill and apply reasonable pressure to draw up as much liquid as possible. If the stain is still apparent, you will need to repeat the process and if necessary moisten with water or a solution of mild detergent (ideally wool detergent). Ensure you remove all traces of the detergent by diluting the stained area with minimal water and then draw as much of the liquid up as possible again. You can cover it with a colorfast cloth and weigh down the area for a few hours. Never saturate or vigorously rub the stain.
If the spill has left a stain, decide if it is water based or oil based and treat it accordingly by following these steps provided by Armadillo. For highly colored spills such as paint, makeup, and colored beverages, contact a professional WoolSafe Approved rug cleaner.
Solids: First remove the solids with a spoon, knife or brush taking care not to brush too harshly. Moisten the affected area with a diluted wool wash or mild detergent and soak up this liquid with a colorfast cloth as outlined above. Never mix different cleaning solutions. Cleaning chemicals can react unpredictably with each other, and it is best to consult a professional when you are unsure of the outcome.
If you get mud on your rug, it is usually best to allow it to dry and then gently brush if off, followed by thorough vacuuming.
Even with regular vacuuming and careful use, you may find dirt and debris will build up in your rug. It is possible to refresh your rug with gentle treatment. Armadillo provides a step-by-step set of instructions here.
For larger soiled areas please refer to a specialist carpet cleaner. If you seek professional cleaning for any purpose, we recommend that you use a Woolmark approved cleaner.
