Let the Light In

For this series, Heath Clay Studio director Tung Chiang drew inspiration from his childhood in Hong Kong—specifically, the memory of capturing fireflies and watching them shine through his fingers. This nostalgic effect is shines in the design of the new table lamps; when illuminated, a dappled pattern of light emerges around each lamp’s base.

The pendant and table lamps are glazed in a skillful gradient, which creates the illusion of light even when the lamps are off.

“The effect reminds me of my childhood; catching fireflies in my hands, then loosening my fingers to let their light shine through.”

Tung Chiang, Clay Studio Director
The Clay Studio began exploring ceramic lighting in 2015 as part of Heath’s third Design Series showcase. Ceramic is arguably an imperfect medium for lighting fixtures—it is heavy and opaque, not translucent. The team loved the challenge of pairing clay with light; since then, they’ve continued to explore illumination through ceramics. Ultimately, the merits of the medium outshone its limitations, and—true to Edith Heath’s ethos—the results were both beautiful and functional.

About the Heath Clay Studio

The Clay Studio—located on-site at the San Francisco factory and showroom—is the heart of creativity at Heath. Under Tung’s leadership, a small group of artisans experiments with shapes and glazes to bring new ideas to life by hand. While much of the Clay Studio’s work is available only in extremely limited quantities to in-person visitors, some designs—like the new lighting collection—are produced in larger quantities and can be shared with a wider audience.
